9 great wedding photography ideas
I am maybe not a classical wedding photographer but I love shooting weddings and it’s a great honor if a couple is choosing me to portrait their big day. I have a couple of rules that I always follow when shooting a wedding and I will prepare an article on that soon. Today however let me share with you 9 great wedding photography ideas you may incorporate into your next shooting. Those ideas are not so obvious hence I hope you like them.

My 1st of the 9 great wedding photography ideas is about hair and makeup. I always join the bride when hair and paint are being done. The main reason why I do so is to portrait the transformation from the woman to the bride. One needs to be prepared a bit as depending on the location light conditions may not be optimal and also some places tend to be very tight. I therefore always have 2 – 3 external flashes and a couple of fixed lenses like the 35mm 1/8, the 50mm 1/8, and the 85mm 1/8 to overcome any challenge. A very big advantage of joining the bride so early is that she will get used to the camera and you grow as a team before the real magic happens.
Mirror mirror on the wall
This cool idea ties up a bit with the hair affair thing. When you photograph hair or makeup being done you will have lots of mirrors that you can make use of it. It’s up to you where you set the focus on and I encourage you to play a bit around with that.
Through the phone
I love taking pictures of someone taking a picture or showing an image on the phone as I find it quite a cool idea. It always happens during the hair sessions and most brides have a very clear idea of what they want. But also during the wedding, many people will take images through their phones.
Play with focus
My 4th of the 9 great wedding photography ideas are about to play with focus. Focus and depth of field are powerful tools in photography and I love to play around with them. This requires a bit of practice as choosing the proper f-stop plays a major role. So one should be experienced in using the camera blindly with regards to settings but also understanding the same. If the DoF is too shallow the effect might not work. The same is true if the DoF is too wide.
My 5th of the 9 great wedding photography ideas are about wedding rings. The wedding rings are one of the most important artifacts during a wedding ceremony. Their symbol represents the covenant of marriage. The obvious moment to photograph the wedding rings is when the groom puts the ring on the finger of his future wife and vise versa. However, there will be many other great opportunities to put the ring on the spot.
For some reason, people love soup bubbles at weddings and I as the photographer do too. To be honest I sometimes even carry soup bubbles myself in case a good opportunity arises. Soap bubbles are a lot of fun and can help to create beautiful images.
Pay attention to details
While making sure I capture all the important moments I always try to pay attention to some details and get a couple of cool shots. It’s a lot of fun as I make sure I stay vigilant during the entire day.
My 8th of the 9 great wedding photography ideas is about gifts. Not only the wedding couple gets gifts but also the ones that are invited to the wedding. Those little giveaways are a great wait to say thank you and often a lot of effort has been put into creating them. It’s therefore always very nice to portrait those little presents.
The last of the 9 great wedding photography ideas is about one of my favorite things in photography – backlight. Backlight is a great way to create amazing effects on your pictures. The best is to start maybe half an hour before the sun sets and start photographing a couple of guests to get used to the scenery. The perfect light will only last a couple of minutes hence one needs to be quick.
Usually, I am focused on the bride so here comes my bonus tip: Don’t forget the groom!
